Editor’s note: The spirited competition, spectacular shots and sportsmanship displayed at The Presidents Cup last week struck a chord with fans around the world. Here’s a sampling of the e-mails PGATOUR.com received congratulating the U.S. Team on its hard-fought victory. Dear Team USA, My heartfelt congrats to you boys! Although I side a bit towards the International squad, I am happy not only that you won it for yourselves and for Mr. Nicklaus, but for promoting the great game of golf...what a spectacle you all put on! Looking forward to seeing you defend in 2007 at Royal Montreal! See you there. Sincerely, David Rodman of Blainville, Quebec, Canada. Holy cow!! You guys almost gave me multiple heart attacks throughout the weekend. My husband and I sat on the edge of our seats the whole time rooting for you all. What a great display of golf and sportsmanship! It just doesn't get any better than that. Congrats to each of you; with special, special wishes for Freddy C., Chris and, of course, Jack! And, as Gary said, the game of golf was certainly the winner here. I must say, he and his team did a great job, too. I had the opportunity to watch all four days of the 2005 Presidents Cup, and both teams produced some of the most compelling golf I have ever seen. The USA team showed tremendous character in the face of the unrelenting pressure put on them by the International team. My hat is off to all of the competitors for playing golf the way it was meant to be played, competitively between gentlemen. Steve Sgroi Great display of outstanding golf, sportsmanship, camaraderie and clutch efforts by many. Hats off in particular to Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and of course, Chris DiMarco!! Paul Stander Congratulations to the U.S. Team for their Presidents cup victory. This was the most exciting golf I've seen in months. It was especially great to see Fred Couples get the win over Vijay Singh. I've been a fan of Fred's for a very long time and this was a moment I will always remember. Congrats and good luck in the future. Miranda Allen Fantastic -- what a wonderful display of team spirit and effort. I was glued to the TV both Saturday and Sunday. This was an American team that we all knew was special and could and did bond. Bravo!!!!! Carolyn Clayton So very proud of you all. Gentlemen and heroes, everyone. Special congratulations to an old and a very new hero Captain Jack. Sincerely, Lennie Jackson CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! What a wonderful four days of golf - the quality of play, the sportsmanship, the excitement and the camaraderie. And, oh, how special must have been for Jack. As I listened to some of you talk about the session you had on Saturday night, it gave me goose pimples. I wish each you: captain, co-captain, players and spouses, continued success and God's blessing! Judy W. Manns Congratulations for winning the Presidents Cup last weekend. It was fantastic to watch from a 14-year-old. Great games. Well done. Regards, Joshua Guy of Auckland New Zealand That was just unbelievable. That is what being a team is all about You have proven that no matter what level of sports you compete at, coming together as a team is the most important thing. Thanks for the memories and congratulations! Joel Kahnt of Troy High School in Troy, Kansas. I want to offer my congratulations to U.S. Presidents Cup team. It was truly a great win for us filled with lots of thrills and great golf. To Captain Jack, enjoy the rest of you life, you're simply the greatest ever. Efrem Zimbalist Jones Congratulations to the whole Presidents Cup Team. It was the most exciting four days of golf that I or the world has ever seen. In fact, I am going through a withdrawal right now. I just want to keep watching. It was so nice to put the situation of our gulf coast out of our minds for just a little bit. Everyone that loves golf is praying for David Toms and his state of Louisiana, and for his own personal health to be okay. Go Americans!! Barb Wettengel Some of the best golf played under pressure conditions by an entire field that I have ever seen. Such remarkable shots when everyone's best was needed. Congratulations Captain Jack and Team USA! It was particularly enjoyable to watch veterans like Freddie and Davis turn back the clock. Gary Player was right...golf was truly the winner. Colin Williams Congratulations on a great and exciting win and a wonderful tournament overall. It was a close and exciting competition and a real pleasure to watch. What an exceptional example of sportsmanship and camaraderie. I would expect nothing less of teams captained by Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. If only the all world's people and governments could interact in such a positive manner. Gary Player was correct. What a wonderful day for golf. Well played. Andrew Kloeckner With all the sadness and turmoil in our country right now - the hurricanes, Iraq, energy crisis, etc. - the boost you men gave to our spirit is greatly appreciated! Gentlemen, all! Montreal, here we come... Marie Nowakowski Even this Georgia Bulldog loved it when the Florida Gator made that putt on 18. Go SEC and USA!!! Marty Crawford You guys made us all so proud this week. Not just with the win, but with the way you conducted yourselves on and off the course. Chris, when you jarred that last putt to clinch the Cup, the feeling reverberated through the entire golfing nation. Congratulations, guys. Bob Galloway of Fairbanks, Alaska Congratulations to both the USA and International teams for a great display of team sportsmanship, and spirit. It was truly heartwarming. But to the winning USA team what really showed was the closeness of this team, everyone came together like no other team I’ve seen. To Captain Jack Nicklaus, and Assistant Captain Jeff Sluman -- congratulations on a job well done. This team had such a family feeling to them, a credit to Barbara, and Jack Nicklaus, the No. 1 golf family as well. To hear so many players say they wanted to win this for Captain Jack was something very special. I am so happy for each, and every member because this was a total team victory. But for players Fred Couples and, Chris DiMarco, making birdie putts to win their matches was unbelievable. All in all the very best team competition I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch. While the USA team won the matches 18.5 to 15.5 the real winner was the sport of golf. Larry Morris Mr. Nicklaus, You must be proud at the way the team played this weekend. It was apparent in watching the tournament unfold, that this was a team event. Some great match-ups on Friday and Saturday, and the clincher was how the Americans dug deep to clinch the title. Your two "Captains" picks didn't let you down. You and Mr. Player should do it again in ‘07. Bill Faber I watched the entire tournament...and am in awe of my USA team. I shouted to the rooftops when Chris DiMarco sank that putt securing a USA victory. I have never been more proud...Thank you very much for the chills and thrills of this years Presidents Cup tourney. WAY TO GO, GUYS!!!! Alesia Julius Brilliant shot-making, lots of guts... and, throughout, the kind of sportsmanship that makes golf the best game in the world! Plus a gift for my idol, Jack Nicklaus. To everyone who participated: Thanks, for a truly memorable viewing experience. Great job! Quin Hillyer |
