The best of the 2005 Presidents Cup

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. – These are some of the highs and special moments from the sixth Presidents Cup matches at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Best pairing: Tie. Chris DiMarco and Phil Mickelson, U.S.; Retief Goosen and Adam Scott, International. Each duo set a Presidents Cup record by combining for 3½ points for their side in four team matches.

Man of the match: Chris DiMarco, U.S.; Retief Goosen, International. No one else came close.

Best shot: There were so many out there, especially on the final day. “It was a birdie barrage out there,” Peter Lonard said. Three shots stand out, all by DiMarco. His hole-in-one at the seventh with a 7-iron from 187 yards in Saturday Foursomes was terrific, but that was trumped a day later by his 9-iron approach shot from an awkward stance out of the bunker from 152 yards away at No. 18, which Fred Couples claimed was “the greatest shot struck all week.” Then there was his 15-foot birdie putt that followed that beat Stuart Appleby and won The Presidents Cup for the U.S.

Grittiest player: Retief Goosen and Tiger Woods fought through their health problems, and David Toms coming back from his heart scare to win singles was an inspiration. But no one sucked it up better than Jim Furyk, whose rib muscle injury didn’t stop him from getting 2½ points as Woods’ partner or beating Adam Scott, the No. 7 player in the world, in singles.

Fittest player: Though 69, that honor might still go to Gary Player.

Best decision: U.S. captain Jack Nicklaus had several, starting with his willingness to listen to his players, which ended up in the successful pairings of Mickelson and DiMarco and Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods. His Captain’s Picks of Justin Leonard and Fred Couples resulted in five points. Simply coming back to complete unfinished business was his best move, however, and International captain Gary Player gets kudos here, too.

Best hole: The par-3 seventh. DiMarco made his ace there during foursomes with Mickelson, and while applauding the shot, Mickelson’s wife, Amy, lost a sapphire stone out of her ring. After a few frantic moments of searching by a group of marshals and fans, it was found by a volunteer. “This really was a lucky hole,” she remarked.

Best team match: Woods and Furyk halving Saturday’s Foursomes match with Singh and Appleby by making birdie on the final two holes.

Best singles match: There were many, from Couples beating Singh with a birdie at the last to DiMarco’s titanic struggle against Appleby. But nothing compared to the Mickelson-Angel Cabrera showdown in which the last five holes were won with birdies, including Mickelson’s hyper-tense 4-footer on the home hole that sent the match to extra holes before it was settled with a halve.

Strongest fashion statement: Woods, who highlighted his hair and grew a goatee.

Best cheer: “Fear the turtle!” That’s what partisan U.S. fans yelled in honor of former University of Maryland golf coach Fred Funk.

Best quote: Jack Nicklaus, who said, “This is pretty special. If I’m never involved in the game of golf again on a major stage, this was a pretty darn good way to end it.”
