Diary: Funk looks forward to Sunday

Editor’s note: Fred Funk, one of the game’s most popular players, is competing in his second Presidents Cup this week. The 49-year-old who won THE PLAYERS Championship in March will be writing a diary for PGATOUR.com this week. Here is his third installment.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- It was a long day. David Toms and I had a tough match with Tim Clark and Nick O’Hern in the Foursomes Saturday morning. They ended up winning 2 and 1. We played exceptionally well for alternate shot but we just ran into a late buzz saw there. I think they birdied seven of their last 11 holes. It was a little disappointing to see all of those birdies go in for them. But that happens sometimes.

I sat out the Four-Balls Saturday afternoon. It’s hard to watch. It’s harder to watch, actually, I think. You have no control over what’s happening. I went back and forth between the matches. I waited until the first group got to No. 12 and then I followed them for a couple holes. Then the other groups started to come up. It got really exciting there, really exciting. The atmosphere here is incredible.

So now it all comes down to the singles on Sunday. I've been playing good all week, so I'm real pleased. I'd just like to have it add up to some sort of positive points. I was hoping Captain Nicklaus would throw me up against Angel Cabrera and let the long and the short go at it. That would have been pretty funny. I got Michael Campbell, though, so it should be a good match. I’m really looking forward to it. I’d just like to get a positive point in the singles on Sunday. I’ve made two half-points, but I just want to go out tomorrow and do my share and win a point for the team so we can win this thing.
