Saturday's Four-Ball recaps

Match 1 Retief Goosen and Adam Scott def. Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank, 5 and 4 "/story/8886302/ "
The afternoon’s opener was a rematch between two unbeatens who had halved a point in the morning Foursomes. Seven holes into the Four-ball match, though, the International Team began to take control. Retief Goosen and Adam Scott alternated birdies over the next four holes -- bringing their total to seven straight -- and when the Americans bogeyed No. 11, the Internationals had a 4-up advantage. Three holes and two birdies later, the match was over and Goosen and Scott had run their record to 3-0-1.

Match 2 Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco def. Peter Lonard and Nick O’Hern, 6 and 5 "/story/8886302/ "
The Americans, who steamrolled past Angel Cabrera and Michael Campbell 5 and 3 in the morning Foursomes, remained undefeated in another Saturday romp. Chris DiMarco closed out the match with a 20-footer for birdie on the 13th hole -- which followed an eagle on No. 12 after a brilliant second shot left him a putt of 3 feet, 5 inches. Nick O’Hern and Peter Lonard never got untracked, reeling off eight straight pars and a bogey at No. 9 to make the turn 5 down. The Americans, on the other hand, combined for six birdies and the eagle to boost their record to 3-0-1.

Match 3 Davis Love III and Fred Couples halved with Michael Campbell and Angel Cabrera /
Talk about evenly matched. Up-down. Up-up. Down-down. It wasn't so much a roller coaster as a heavyweight championship. The World Cup legends against the Maori Warrior and the Bomber. The Americans went 1 up at the 11th and tried desperately to hang on, but couldn't. Cabrera made a 10-footer at the 17th to square the match, then everyone came to the 18th with a chance. But every putt slid by, leaving them to halve the match.

Match 4 Mark Hensby and Tim Clark def. Kenny Perry and Stewart Cink, 5 and 3 "/story/8886302/ "
The International Team never trailed as nine birdies by Mark Hensby and Tim Clark were too much for a struggling American duo of Kenny Perry and Stewart Cink. Hensby birdied the second by chipping in from 47 feet, and Clark sank a 6-footer at the third for a quick 2-up lead. Perry, playing with a new driver after he cracked the face of his regular stick on the driving range Friday night, countered with a birdie at the fourth but the visitors reeled off three birdies in a row to take command with Hensby making two of them. The match ended on No. 15 when Clark made a 15-foot birdie.

Match 5 Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk def. Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby, 2 up "/story/8886302/ " -->
Another taut showdown featuring the world's top-two ranked players came down to the supporting casts, and Jim Furyk was able to help Tiger Woods considerably for their second Four-Ball victory in as many days. Furyk, his rib injury less bothersome, shot 6-under par on his own ball while Woods wasn't nearly as sharp. Neither the U.S. nor the International team of Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby trailed by more than one hole until the 18th, when Woods' 6-foot birdie was conceded after Appleby missed one from 10 feet. Actually, the Internationals never trailed until Woods buried a 17-foot putt for birdie at the long par-4 16th. Appleby, on three occasions, won holes to put his team 1-up but he missed birdie tries on each of the three closing holes that could have swung the match. Over the two rounds Saturday (Four-Ball and Foursomes) Woods and Furyk won 10 holes to nine for the Internationals. They halved the rest.
