Saturday's Foursomes recaps
| Match 1 |
Retief Goosen and Adam Scott halved with Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank |
/
|
|
In a showdown of 2-0 teams, neither side gained the upper hand when it
was finished. The U.S., which faces the same duo in afternoon
four-ball play, found itself 2 down after two holes when Goosen
converted Scott's approach to within 5 feet into an opening birdie and
Leonard and Verplank bogeyed the second. The Americans, however,
fought back to even with birdies at Nos. 5 and 7. Leonard made a
10-footer and Verplank converted from 13 feet. Neither side led by
more than one the rest of the way with Nos. 12-15 won
alternately. The two sides parred in for the halve.

| Match 2 |
Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco def. Michael Campbell and Angel Cabrera, 5 and 3 |
|
|
Buoyed by Chris DiMarco's hole-in-one that capped a three-hole string
of wins for the U.S., DiMarco and Phil Mickelson continued their
unbeaten week with a resounding win over Michael Campbell and Angel
Cabrera. The International pair led early by a hole and played the
alternate shot format in 3-under par without a bogey. But they still
got blitzed by the Americans, who made seven birdies in addition to
DiMarco's ace and shot 8 under through 15 holes. The U.S. duo is 2-0-1
together this week. The fiery DiMarco was the catalyst once again as
his 11-foot birdie putt at the fifth hole squared the
match. Mickelson's approach to within 2 feet at the sixth set up a
second birdie, then DiMarco nailed his ace with a 7-iron from 187
yards. Another DiMarco approach into the par-3 ninth set up
Mickelson's 20-foot birdie and the Americans were off to the
races. They closed out the Internationals on 15 with DiMarco's 15-foot
birdie.

| Match 3 |
Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby halved with Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk |
/
|
|
A see-saw match ended with a half point for each side as clutch
putting marked a terrific stuggle, highlighted by a late and amazing
American push. Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods got up to a quick 2-up
lead, but the Internationals eventually fought back, aided by two long
par-saving putts by Stuart Appleby on the third and fourth holes that
kept him and Vijay Singh from falling farther behind. The
International Team found its stride starting at the eighth when the
U.S. chopped up the hole and conceded it, and then the visitors won
the ninth and 10th with birdies. They went 2 up on No. 14 when
Singh's approach on the 143-yard par 3 stopped 4 feet away and Appleby
converted. The U.S. answered with Furyk's shot to 2 feet, but they
then fell two back again with a bogey. The Americans would not buckle,
though. Furyk capitalized on Woods' approach to No. 17 to 10 feet,
then on 18, after a 304-yard drive by Woods, Furyk hit it to 5 feet
and Woods drained the birdie to grab a half point.

| Match 4 |
Tim Clark and Nick O'Hern def. Fred Funk and David Toms, 2 and 1 |
|
|
After stumbling out of the gates with bogeys on two of the first six
holes, the International duo of Tim Clark and Nick O'Hern blitzed Fred
Funk and David Toms with a barrage of birdies. After going 2 up
through six holes, the U.S. won only one more, although halves at
Nos. 7 and 9 and a birdie at the 12th kept them two ahead. But the
Internationals reeled off three straight birdies for wins at
Nos. 13-16, and they sealed the deal when the U.S. had to concede the
17th after failing to reach the green in regulation.

| Match 5 |
Davis Love III and Stewart Cink def. Trevor Immelman and Mike Weir, 1 up |
|
|
Davis Love III and Stewart Cink saw nearly all of a 4-up lead
evaporate down the stretch, but clutch approach shots by the pair on
the final two holes saved a full point and left the two sides
deadlocked at 8½ points each after the end of the morning
session. Mike Weir and Trevor Immelman, who teamed to win their
Foursomes match Thursday, struggled with bogeys on three of the first
nine holes. Coupled with a Love birdie at the first, the visitors were
4 down. They rallied with birdies on Nos. 14-16, and appeared ready to
square the match at the 17th when Immelman's approach stopped 8 feet
from the hole. But Cink knocked an L-wedge to within inches for a
conceded birdie to match Weir's effort, and Immelman's 20-foot birdie
bid at the last lipped out to allow the Americans to escape.
