Diary: Weir looks to have continued success with Immelman

Thursday was a great way to start The Presidents Cup matches for our team. We got out to a good lead and I was pleased to be able to contribute. My partner, Trevor Immelman, and I played exceedingly well right from the first hole, making a lot of birdies and avoiding any bogeys. David Toms and Stewart Cink, our opponents, really didn't play that poorly -- we just played really solid on every hole and didn't give them any openings.

On the first hole, I hit my drive into great position and Trevor stuck his shot to about 7 feet and I made that. Then on the fourth hole, Trevor drained about an 80-foot putt for a win. I can't remember the last time I saw a putt that long go down. I think he was in another county when he hit it.

On the next hole, I hit my drive right down the middle and Trevor hit the approach so close, the American team conceded the putt. That put us 4 under after the first four holes and put a lot of pressure on to the U.S. Team. When you get down like that, you have to start trying to win holes, and it can force you to hit shots you might not under normal circumstances and I think we benefited from that. Trevor was very impressive today, especially considering it was his first appearance. I didn't really tell him too much out there -- I just let him play his game. A couple of times we both read putts, but I didn't want to say anything to throw him off his game. He knew I was there if he wanted anything. On Friday, I'm going to play again with Trevor -- hey, why break up a good combination? -- and I'm looking forward to that. We get along great and that's a big key to the team format.
