Sleeper Picks: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
Mark Wilson ... On one hand, his scoring average on his last 12 rounds of TPC Summerlin is 67.83. On the other, despite breaking par in 11 of those loops, he hasn't logged a top 20 in the three starts, settling for respective finishes of T24, T38 and T22 in 2008, 2009 and 2010. (TPC Summerlin played as a par 72 in 2008 before the then-par-5 third hole was modified to play as a par 4 in 2009 and since.)
Russell Knox ... Shootouts on the PGA TOUR can take on the feel of a Web.com Tour event since many require the touring pros to go deep to contend. To wit, the Scot carded a second-round 59 at the Albertsons Boise Open in July en route to posting 19-under 265, and still didn't crack the top 10 for the tournament. But that he's not opposed to taking on history is all the more reason to circle him at TPC Summerlin where he tied for 13th in his only appearance in 2012.
Morgan Hoffmann ... Enjoyed a solid run midseason in 2013 to secure a return trip to the PGA TOUR. Making his debut at TPC Summerlin. Ranked 103rd in greens hit during his rookie season on the PGA TOUR but checked in at T13 in par breakers. Among other things, that's evidence of confidence. Survived the 36-hole cut on the number at the Frys.com Open after stuffing his approach to 22 inches at the 36th hole en route to birdie, and then scored bogey-free 67 in the third round. Suffered only six bogeys and nothing worse all week.
Richard H. Lee ... Sat out the season opener to be with his wife for the birth of the couple's second child. He crawled to the finish line of the 2013 season, which for him was the Deutsche Bank Championship where he placed T73 after missing two cuts prior. However, he survived 17 of 24 cuts for the season, ranked 11th in strokes gained-putting and led the TOUR in par-3 scoring. His only previous appearance at TPC Summerlin was a microcosm of his 2013 splits. In this tournament in 2012, he finished T6 and ranked seventh in SG-P and first in par-3 scoring.
Jason Bohn ... He was under par in every round and placed T40 at the Frys.com Open, but he's included here because of his success at TPC Summerlin. His slate includes a T14 in 2009 and a T8 last year. Missed only 13 greens in regulation here in 2012. Also came on strong late in the 2013 season to retain his playing privileges, so don't rule out this wily veteran in the West.
