Sleeper Picks: Tampa Bay Championship presented by EverBank
Erik Compton ... After logging his first top 10 on the PGA TOUR -- a T4 at The Honda Classic where he ranked eighth in strokes gained-putting -- he tied for 24th in Puerto Rico. The first-timer at Copperhead owns the kind of makeup that could tame the course although the same argument could be made on many other tracks. Long off the tee (55th in distance), he's also 66th in greens hit and 39th in strokes gained-putting. Moreover, you can't rule out the value of experience of putting on Bermuda greens.
Matt Jones ... Jarred a greenside bunker shot for eagle at the 72nd hole of the Puerto Rico Open to secure a season-best share of 14th place. It was a microcosm for the kind of turnaround the Aussie has enjoyed this season, evidence that his rededication is paying dividends. He's 5-for-6 with four top 25s. Sits fifth on TOUR in total driving, 66th in greens hit, 46th in strokes gained-putting and fifth in the all-around.
Robert Streb ... The rookie promptly ended an 0-for-3 skid that concluded the West Coast Swing with a pair of top 20s this month. En route to a share of 18th place at The Honda Classic, he ranked second in the field in strokes gained-putting and T1 in par-3 scoring average. His clip of 2.81 at PGA National included four birdies and four pars on the pair of par 3s on The Bear Trap. He then led the field in greens in regulation in Puerto Rico where he finished T11. Ranks 28th on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained-putting.
Jeff Klauk ... The Florida native has mixed good golf with the challenges of living with epilepsy this season. In five starts, he's survived three cuts to rank 101st in FedExCup points. He's 2-for-2 at Copperhead and ranked inside the top 15 in strokes gained-putting in both starts. Also co-led the field in scrambling in his most recent appearance (2010). Currently 38th on TOUR in strokes gained-putting.
George Coetzee ... The South African's U.S. junket continues. After a first-round knockout at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, he tied for 53rd at last week's WGC-Cadillac. His week at TPC Blue Monster at Trump Doral was marred by a field-high 80 on Sunday, but he led the field for the week in average distance of putts made (94'10"). Prior to his stay in America, he began the 2013 European Tour season with four consecutive top 10s. Ranks 31st on his home circuit in greens in regulation and 11th in putts per GIR.
