SYNOPSIS
Every fairway. Birdies on the last two holes to break out of a four-man tie. Tiger Woods sure knew how to make a statement at the Memorial Tournament. The world's No. 1 player fired a 65 on Sunday to come from four strokes off the pace for the win. The victory was Woods' second in his first seven starts since since coming back from knee surgery and his fourth at Muirfield Village where Jack Nicklaus, the man whose records he chases, reigns supreme. "I knew I could do this," Woods said. "... I just came off of a pretty extended break, and I was close to winning, but the game wasn't quite there when I really needed it on Sunday. I rectified that." Woods was most proud of his entire body of work -- not just the emphatic birdies on the last two holes. Woods hit all 14 fairways for the first time since he won the 2003 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard and his driving accuracy percentage of 87.5 tied the best of his career. He hit 53 of 72 greens in regulation, too, including that exclamation point of a 7-iron that stopped 14 inches from the 18th hole. Need we say more? So much for those who openly wondered whether the post-surgery Woods would approach the player he was before he won his 14th major on one leg at the 2008 U.S. Open. "I wish you'd all quit (ticking) him off," Jim Furyk, who finished second, said. " ... Wish you'd just quit chapping him so much and make him come back and keep proving stuff. Tiger Woods is always Tiger Woods. He can't be 100 percent every week, but I'm sure he answered a lot of questions today."
