SYNOPSIS
 Of Tiger Woods' many victories, this may end up being the most memorable. He'd had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee two days after the Masters and a possible return at the Memorial Tournament was scrapped to give Woods more time to heal for Torrey Pines. He was clearly in pain (he was also playing with two stress fractures in his left tibia), yet Woods managed to make a 12-foot birdie putt the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate. He had to birdie the 18th again on Monday to force sudden death, which began at No. 7 where Woods two-putted for par and Mediate found a fairway bunker, then missed a 20-footer to save par. The win was Woods' third in the U.S. Open, his seventh at Torrey Pines, and the 65th of his career. A week later, he underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL. "It was unbelievable," Woods said. "The whole week, the golf course was set up so fair, but also so difficult. Everyone who's come out this week has been absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere is incredible. I mean the fans here ¦ they made the tournament. And then today it was just unreal. Honestly ... just the ebbing and flowing. Roc looked like he was in control, I thought I was in control then he was back in control again. And it was back and forth, back and forth. And 90 holes wasn't enough. We had to go one more."
