SYNOPSIS
 Tiger Woods fueled questions of a calendar-year Grand Slam when he added the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black to the Masters title he won two months earlier. It was the first time in 30 years that a player had won the first two majors of the season -- Jack Nicklaus being the last in 2002. Woods was the only player to finish under par on the demanding, 7,214-yard public course, shooting 3 under 277. He held a four-stroke lead over Sergio Garcia and a five-shot edge over Phil Mickelson entering the final round and closed with a gutsy 72. Three-putts on the first two holes allowed the two challengers to pull within two shots, but that was the closest anyone would come. Mickelson again was within two after he birdied the 13th hole but his bid ended with bogeys on the next two holes. He finished second at even par. "This one was hard fought," Woods said. "¦ You couldn't just slap it around and play poorly and contend for this championship. You had to play well, and I was able to do it the entire week."
