Timing is everything. Mark Wilson's two-year exemption for winning the 2007 Honda Classic was up last year. So he made sure he could enter 2010 with a clear conscience early when he won the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun. Wilson's win turned his 2009 season around. In the 15 rounds he'd played previously, the UNC standout had only shot three rounds in the 60s. He broke 70 all four days in Mexico - thanks in part to a putting tip from Kevin Weeks -- and hung tough during dark, windy conditions on Sunday to win by two strokes. Wilson, who joined the TOUR in 2003, has made steady progress over the last three years. He's had three seven-figure seasons, including a career-best $1.8 million last year, and came up big against star-studded fields in ties for third at the Memorial Tournament and 10th at the BMW Championship, where he was the co-leader with Tiger Woods after two rounds.
He's the best Tar Heel on TOUR right now. Two wins and a slew of good play has the Wisconsin native on leaderboards consistently.
It was a career year for Wilson, who had personal bests in FedExCup points and money. Two reasons why: Wilson ranked 18th in total birdies and 30th in the all-around category.
