When David Toms tees it up at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, he'll be exactly four years removed from his last PGA TOUR victory. He'll have to have a ton of confidence, though, considering he won the same tournament in 2006 and tied for second at Waialae Country Club last year. The runner-up finish to Zach Johnson was the first of three second places for the avid LSU fan in 2009. He also shot four rounds in the 60s to tie for second at the St. Jude Classic presented by FedEx and two weeks later shot a trio of 65s on the way to finishing runner-up to Kenny Perry at the Travelers Championship. Along the way, Toms was his old reliable self. He won more than $3 million, posted seven top-10s and finished 19th in the FedExCup. Toms ranked seventh in scoring (69.13), fourth in driving accuracy and ninth All-Around.
He showed renewed dedication and vigor in 2009. He realized that off the course interests can wait a little while longer while he tries to find the form that made him a factor in all the important tournaments.
Toms isn't a long hitter, as he ranks T119 on TOUR in driving distance. But he's certainly accurate, placing fourth in driving accuracy percentage in 2009.
