In three short years, Steve Marino has asserted himself into the conversation about the best player never to have won on TOUR. The 2010 season could be the one where he gives fans something else to talk about as he picks up that breakthrough win. The UVA graduate posted his second career runner-up finish at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial where he lost to Steve Stricker in a playoff. The win would have been a very popular one - his mother Fran, who grew up next to the storied club, had friends and family wearing "Marino's Mob" tee-shirts of support. Marino was the co-leader with Tom Watson after 36 holes of the British Open and also came up big during the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. He took a share of the lead into the final round of The Barclays, shared the first round lead at the BMW Championship and tied for seventh at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. Marino finished 15th in the FedExCup, as a result, and earned more than $2 million for the second straight year.
He's borrowing Tim Clark's monkey and still trying to wrap his arms around that first win. But if he keeps knocking on the door it has to open and when it does watch out.
In 2007, Marino tied for 96th in scoring with a 70.95 average. His scoring average of 69.90 made him ninth in the category in 2009 and helped him notch five top-10 finishes.
