Although there are several candidates, Tim Clark will enter the 2010 season as the poster boy for those wondering who is the best player still looking for his breakthrough PGA TOUR victory. It's a backhanded compliment if there ever was one, but Clark is too good for it not to happen soon. Clark now has seven runner-up finishes, and his most recent opportunity came last year at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. He led by two with five holes remaining but bogeyed the 14th and missed a 9-footer for par on the 18th that sent him into the playoff Steve Stricker won. Clark later admitted, "I have a lot of work to do when it comes to closing out golf tournaments." The talented South African's season was hardly a total loss, though. He won more than $2.3 million for the third time in his career and closed it out with a tie for fourth, his fifth of the season, at the Frys.com Open. Not to mention, Clark was a stalwart in his third Presidents Cup, posting a 2-2-1 record and earning Captain Greg Norman's respect as his "pit bull."
Is there an expiration date on a can of worms? Or, the monkey on his back dies of old age. Either way, Clark wins in 2010.
He ranked second in driving accuracy by hitting the fairway 74.06 percent of the time in '09, a significant increase from his 64.98 percent (83rd on TOUR) average in 2008.
