Paul Casey hopes to be making fewer trips to the doctor's office in 2010. In the throes of a career-defining season last year, Casey tore a muscle on the right side of his ribcage while he was preparing for the 138th Open Championship and all but missed the rest of the season. The Englishman finished four rounds at Turnberry but withdrew after playing six holes of the first round at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. He kept turning up at tournament sites during the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup eager to play but the pain and the possibility of further damage wouldn't allow it. Casey was able to play in the Volvo World Match Play Championship on the European Tour but had to withdraw from the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and missed the finale of the Race to Dubai. Before he was injured, Casey won twice on the European Tour, reached the title match of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship and picked up his first PGA TOUR victory at the Shell Houston Open. Casey beat J.B. Holmes in a playoff in Houston and rose to No. 3 in the world.
Just coming into his own on the world stage and he was injured. If he is healthy he is a top-five player in the world. Should take as much time as he needs to heal.
Casey missed only two putts all year (61-for-63, 96.83 percent) from 4 feet or less, which ranked third on TOUR. The TOUR average? 91.06 percent.
