CHICAGO—Two amateurs from China who played early this season on the PGA TOUR China Series are right in the mix after the first round of the Western Amateur at The Beverly Country Club.

Ze Cheng Dou, 17, who made it to match play at the recent U.S. Junior Amateur, opened with a 6-under 65 at the 112th playing of this event to take a share of the first-round lead with Geoff Drakeford. Two strokes behind and tied for fourth is 15-year-old Tian Lang Guan, of Guangdong. Guan had a seven-birdie, two-bogey performance and is tied with Beau Hossler, Bryson DeChambeau and Joshua Munn.

Dou, a native of Henan, was the dominant amateur in the first portion of the PGA TOUR China Series’ season, recording a runner-up showing at the Buick Open and a tie for fifth at the Lanhai Open. He made the cut in all four tournaments he played.

In two PGA TOUR China Series’ appearances, Guan missed the cut at his hometown event, the Buick Open, then tied for 60th at the Lanhai Open.

Past winners of the Western Amateur include current PGA TOUR players Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard and Ryan Moore. Others who have won the tournament include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Lanny Wadkins, Curtis Strange, Ben Crenshaw, Francis Ouimet and Frank Stranahan.
