Northern Trust Open tournament officials, including L.A. sports icon and Executive Director Jerry West, announced that the 2011 Northern Trust Open raised $1.6 million for deserving non-profit organizations in the Los Angeles area. The announcement was made last night by West at an L.A. Legends Club reception at Riviera Country Club.
The 2011 Northern Trust Open, won by Australia's Aaron Baddeley, was held February 15-20 at historic Riviera Country Club. The 2012 event is scheduled for February 13-19.
The $1.6 million raised in 2011 brings the total generated for Los Angeles charities since the event's inception to $53.5 million. It is estimated that the Northern Trust Open helps 15,000 Los Angeles residents each year, which includes 5,000 kids who are cared for in programs like The First Tee of Los Angeles County, Agassi All-Stars of Safe Passage Tennis Program, Foster Family Picnic, Ready to Learn, L.A. Watts Summer Games and the Riordan Volunteer Leadership Development Program.
"I continue to be amazed at what can happen when a community comes together to support something that benefits so many," said West. "Last year, the Northern Trust Open raised $1.5 million for local charities, and I said that was a great start but that we needed to do more. We've moved the needle once again in 2011, thanks to the hard work of the staff, the volunteers, the PGA TOUR, Northern Trust and the LAJCC -- as well as the support of this entire community. But once again, I'm going to challenge everyone to do more, to set our sights even higher for 2012. Let's continue to grow this wonderful event and bring even more assistance to our neighbors who need it most."
"The Northern Trust Open improves the lives of people in need across Los Angeles by raising millions for worthy charitable organizations," Northern Trust Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frederick H. Waddell said. "We are committed to the vital philanthropic mission of the tournament and are thrilled that our partnership with the PGA Tour will continue. I would like to offer my thanks to Jerry West, the PGA TOUR, the LAJCC, the Los Angeles community and the many charitable groups whose involvement contributed to the successful 2011 Northern Trust Open."
Northern Trust and the PGA TOUR recently announced a four-year sponsorship extension for the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles through 2016. Northern Trust's original five-year agreement expires after the 2012 tournament.
Part of the charitable impact includes the TICKETS Fore CHARITYTMprogram, which generated $217,535 for nonprofit organizations in the greater Los Angeles area in its second year. In the six months leading up to the event, organizations were given a chance to raise funds by promoting ticket sales to the tournament. Northern Trust Corporation (Nasdaq: NTRS) gave participating charities an additional incentive by offering up to $50,000 in matching donations for the organizations that raised the most funds over three scheduled check points. A total of 67 non-profit organizations participated in the TICKETS Fore CHARITY program this year and the Los Angeles Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America, Inc. (twice) and the Notre Dame Academy won the three bonus pools.
