TSN and RDS home of 2007 Presidents Cup in Montreal
TORONTO -- TSN and RDS have secured exclusive Canadian broadcast rights to the most prestigious golf event ever in Canada -- the 2007 Presidents Cup from Montreal -- following a new four-year extension with the PGA TOUR for Canadian English and French-language rights to key events. The deal, which begins in 2007 and runs through 2010, includes The Presidents Cup, five PGA TOUR events including the Canadian Open, and four Challenge Season events. All PGA TOUR events will be televised in High Definition on TSN HD. These events complement TSN’s and RDS’s golf broadcast package, which includes the four Majors (The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship) and the Ryder Cup, giving the networks the most prestigious golf schedule in the country (see schedule below). “The Presidents Cup will undoubtedly be one of the biggest sports events of the year, and as industry leaders, this was a must-have for TSN and RDS. Our golf broadcast schedule is second-to-none with the biggest events of the season. We continue to take an aggressive approach to securing the most popular and high-profile events on the annual sports calendar,” said Phil King, President, TSN. In addition to The Presidents Cup (2007 and 2009), TSN and RDS will have coverage of the Canadian Open, the second-oldest stop on the PGA TOUR and the third-oldest championship in the world. The deal also gives the networks annual coverage of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, FBR Open, World Golf Championships-CA Championship, Barclays Classic, Merrill Lynch Shootout, Target World Challenge, Wendy’s Three Tour Challenge and ADT Skills Challenge. “With this agreement, RDS cements its status as the home for golf for francophone viewers. We are particularly pleased that The Presidents Cup will be presented on RDS in 2007, when the best golfers in the world will be competing here in our own backyard,” said Gerry Frappier, President of Le Réseau des sports. “The PGA TOUR is very pleased to continue our valuable partnership with TSN and RDS as we bring The Presidents Cup to Canada for the first time,” said Tim Leisure, PGA TOUR Vice President of International Television. “Moreover, we are embarking on a new era in golf in 2007 with the introduction of the season-long FedExCup points competition and our first-ever PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, which begins with the Barclays Classic. We are very excited to bring coverage of key events to Canadian golf fans through TSN and RDS.” TSN and RDS will have live coverage of all four rounds of the 2007 Presidents Cup, which will be played September 27 to 30 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club, marking the first time the competition has been held in Canada. TSN will also televise opening ceremonies on September 27. A biennial event, The Presidents Cup features the 12 best players from the United States competing against the 12 best players from the rest of the world (excluding Europe) in competitive match play format. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player will return in 2007 as Captains for the U.S. and International teams, respectively. The event attracts the biggest names in golf: those who participated in the 2005 Presidents Cup include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Fred Couples, Chris DiMarco, Justin Leonard, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Adam Scott, Stuart Appleby, Michael Campbell and Canadian Mike Weir. TSN and RDS will also have coverage of the 2009 Presidents Cup, to be held in the United States.
