ABC special charts Woods' rise to the top
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- On August 27, 1996, a college junior by the name of Eldrick “Tiger” Woods took the stage at the Greater Milwaukee Open press conference to announce he was leaving Stanford University to pursue golf at the professional level. The 3-time U.S. Amateur champ, still relatively unknown to those outside of the golf industry, stepped up to the microphone and calmly declared, “Hello, World.” Eleven years and 54 PGA TOUR titles later, Woods has evolved from 21-year-old rookie to golf icon, sparking a tidal wave of interest across the globe that redefined the sport and attracted a new generation of fans to the game. “Tiger Woods: Hello World” is a one-hour special airing Sunday, October 8 at 2 p.m. ET on ABC Sports, that will chronicle his climb from young phenom to one of the most recognizable athletes in the world. From his first major championship win at the 1997 Masters to his current streak of six PGA TOUR wins in a row, “Tiger Woods: Hello World” will showcase Woods’ unprecedented rise to the top of the golf world. When he burst onto the scene in 1996, Woods quickly made national headlines, winning two events during his first three months on TOUR. From there, Woods launched into a decade of dominance, racking up 54 professional wins including 12 major championships titles – second only to Jack Nicklaus’ record 18. “Tiger Woods: Hello World” will honor such feats as his historic 2000 season when he won nine TOUR events including the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship. The hot streak continued with a win at the 2001 Masters where he became the only player to win all four professional majors in a row- an accomplishment now deemed the “Tiger Slam.”
Woods exudes a seemingly superhuman level of confidence while on the course, while his consistency and relentless quest for perfection, have earned Woods the utmost respect from both fans and fellow TOUR players alike. “Tiger Woods: Hello World” will feature interviews with several former and current TOUR players including Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson and Tom Lehman as they discuss Woods’ presence on TOUR and share their personal experiences with the 30-year-old champion.
