Joined the PGA TOUR for the 2006 season, having finished among the top 125 as a non-member in 2005. Englishman started the 2006 European Tour season, beating playing partner Tiger Woods on the final day to win the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, China in late 2005. In season's first appearance on the PGA TOUR, finished T5 at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, defeating Steve Elkington, Scott Verplank and Phil Mickelson before falling to eventual champion Geoff Ogilvy in 19 holes in the quarterfinals. Collected a second title on the European Tour with his five-stroke victory at the BMW Championship at the Wentworth Club. In finishing five strokes ahead of Simon Khan, he became the first English winner since Nick Faldo's record-breaking fourth title in 1989. .Shared the second-round lead with Vijay Singh at the Barclays Classic at 8-under 134 before closing rounds of 73-74 left him tied for 13th. Recorded top-20 finishes in both the Masters and the U.S. Open. Was a member of the winning European Tour Ryder Cup team for the second time. Posted a record of 2-0-1. Played in the Frys.com Open in Las Vegas for his 15th tournament start of the season to maintain his eligibility on the TOUR (the Ryder Cup counts as a TOUR-approved tournament). Suffered an abdominal injury while warming up for the second round of the U.S. Open. Was forced to withdraw and didn't play again for nearly two months, until missing the cut at the PGA. Finished T6 at both the WGC-NEC Invitational and the WGC-American Express Championship, his second and third career top-10s in PGA TOUR events. Ended the year with a victory in the inaugural HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, China on the European Tour. Paired with Tiger Woods in the final round, won by three strokes.
