Missed just one event on the 2003 Nationwide Tour, making the cut in 20 of 29 tournaments with nine top-25s. A T12 at the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship jumped him to the No. 20 position on the money list with $179,963 to receive the final 2004 PGA TOUR card. Carried the lead into the final round of both the LaSalle Bank Open and the Gila River Golf Classic, only to come up just short both times. After two years (1996-97) as one of top players on PGA TOUR, struggled to return to that level since. Finished outside the top 150 in 2000 and 2002, and outside top 125 in 2001. Finished fourth at 2000 Qualifying Tournament to retain his card for the seventh consecutive season. Strong season in 1998 with four top-10s, including T2 at Sony Open in Hawaii. Third full TOUR season in 1997 featured nine top-10s, along with second consecutive appearance in THE TOUR Championship. Had two top-5s in major championships (third at Masters, T5 at U.S. Open). In 1996, led after 36 and 54 holes at THE PLAYERS Championship, but finished T2. First earned TOUR membership with 24th-place finish at 1994 Qualifying Tournament, finally getting card on seventh try. In first full year in 1995, earned more than $160,000. Two-time winner in five-year (1991-94, 2003) Nationwide Tour career, at 1993 Ozarks Open and 1994 Alabama Classic. Played on Southern Africa Tour in 1989-90. Played first professional tournament in Durban, South Africa in 1989, flying on ticket that had been purchased by Nolan Henke, a friend from junior golf. Henke had planned to play Southern Africa Tour, but made it through Q-School instead. Enjoys small-town life in Flat Rock, NC, where he explains: "You can count the number of stoplights on one fist." Flat Rock was home of poet Carl Sandburg. Met wife Ilse while playing Southern Africa Tour. Son's name is pronounced VICK-us. |
