Was T7 at the MasterCard Classic in Mexico for his first top-10 finish of the season.

Opened with a 5-under-par 67 at the Farmers Charity Classic and shared the first-round lead before finishing T14.

Played twice on the 2003 Champions Tour on sponsor exemptions, with a best finish of T4 at the Constellation Energy Classic in Baltimore. Was planning on playing more Champions Tour golf in 2004. Missed five of eight cuts on the European Tour in 2003.

Captained European Team to 2002 Ryder Cup victory at The Belfry. Also finished third at Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship.

Played in the Ryder Cup eight times, including a highlight moment at The Belfry, site of 2002 event. Holed the winning putt there in 1985 as Europe ended a 28-year drought in the event.

Has participated in more than 680 tournaments on the European Tour entering 2004, a record.

Left school at age 13, turned pro at age 16 and started on European Tour at age 17. Took nine events to make first cut. Has gone on to win 21 times on the European Tour in 30-year career.
