Enjoyed spotlight after defeating No. 1 seed Tiger Woods at 2002 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships. Lost to Nick Price 2 nd 1 to finish T17. Finished T8 at the British Open, two shots out of a four-man playoff at 4-under-par 280. Six-under-par 65 on Sunday tied Tiger Woods and Stuart Appleby for low final-round honors. Won Holden Clearwater Classic on Nationwide Tour in Australia in March 2002. Earned third European Tour victory of career at the 2001 Compass Group English Open. Win led him to 17th on the Volvo Order of Merit. Still remembered for his finish to the 1992 Scottish Open at Gleneagles, when he covered the last five holes in 7-under par to defeat Colin Montgomerie for first European Tour crown. Also captured the 1995 Benson and Hedges International Open. Taught to play the game by his father, Don, a top amateur golfer. Former Australian junior champion and Australian Rookie of the Year. Finished runner-up to Mark James in his first European Tour event, 1989 Dubai Desert Classic. Won first professional title on home soil when he captured the Canon Challenge in Sydney in 1998. Second to Andrew Coltart in Australasian Order of Merit that year. Represented Australia in the Alfred Dunhill Cup for the first time in 1999 and helped his country reach the final, where they lost to Spain. |
