Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002. Did not join the PGA TOUR until age 32 after serving four years in the Army in World War II and 10 years of construction work. Won 15 career titles on the PGA TOUR, including the 1958 U.S. Open at age 40 where he prevailed by four shots over Gary Player in 95-degree heat during a double-round final day. Won the 1980 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf with Art Wall, a year after the pair fell to Julius Boros and Roberto De Vicenzo in a six-hole playoff. One of the founding members of the Champions Tour. Long considered one of golf's most colorful personalities. |
