If last year was any indication, this is the point in the season in which you need to keep an eye on second-year TOUR member Morgan Hoffmann.
Coming off arguably his best performance of the season -- a 17th-place tie at THE PLAYERS Championship -- Hoffmann returns to the site of his best finish on the PGA TOUR.
Last season, Hoffmann tied for fifth at TPC Four Seasons for his first-ever top-10 finish on the PGA TOUR. He added two more top-10 showings in a rookie season that ended with Hoffmann finishing 117th in the FedExCup, but has yet to better the result of his first visit to the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
That result, just Hoffmann's 10th at a TOUR member, helped the now-24-year-old to move up the eligibility pecking order and better set his schedule.
"I had a really slow start," Hoffmann said of his rookie campaign at last season's event. "It's tough with the reshuffles this season because it's a shorter season, and you had to play good the first four weeks, which I didn't, so it was difficult to get into events … I've learned a lot out here this year, and I think the finish will be good."
The finish was much better for Hoffmann, who entered the week outside the FedExCup's top 170 but gained enough ground by season's end to qualify for the Playoffs and secure status for the 2013-14 season. This was key, as it allowed the former Oklahoma State standout to set his own schedule.
With that ability, Hoffmann has played 18 events already (compared to 20 all of last season). While the TOUR's new wrap-around season played a part in that, the rest has come from Hoffmann's improved status. While he again travels to the HP Byron Nelson Championship without a top 10 on his season resume, his 94th-place FedExCup standing is a hefty step-up from last season's mark.
The stats support the FedExCup improvement for Hoffmann. He currently ranks 32nd on TOUR in driving distance, 28th in strokes gained-putting and 52nd in the all-around ranking. With these numbers, and his performance in Texas last season, in mind, two of PGATOUR.COM's experts have elected to start Hoffmann in fantasy this week with one of them picking him to break through with his first TOUR title.
No matter the result this week, Hoffmann will leave TPC Four Seasons in better shape in the FedExCup race than he did a year ago. With many of the events he played well in last year still to come, he could be one to watch as the FedExCup race continues.
