FedExCup movers: Who's up, down after the PGA ChampionshipROCHESTER, NY - AUGUST 11: Jason Dufner of the United States celebrates on the 18th green after his two-stroke victory at the 95th PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club on August 11, 2013 in Rochester, New York. The state of New York was “Dufnering” on Sunday as Jason Dufner earned his third career PGA TOUR title and first major victory at the PGA Championship.
Dufner, who has qualified for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola each of the last two years, picked up 48 spots in the FedExCup standings to check in this week at No. 14. One of the breakout stars of the 2012 season, Dufner didn’t pick up his first top 10 this year until the U.S. Open and has added two more in the last two weeks to surge up the FedExCup ranks.
PGA Championship runner-up and fourth-place finishers Jim Furyk and Jonas Blixt each moved into the FedExCup top 30 after strong showings at Oak Hill. Furyk, the 2010 FedExCup champion, is now 21st while Blixt goes to 28th. These spots are important because only the FedExCup top 30 will be eligible to compete in the Playoff finale at East Lake.
Close to the cut line for the Playoffs was Martin Kaymer, who started the week at 119th but finished it in 112th. With just one week remaining in the PGA TOUR season, Kaymer has likely locked up his spot in the Playoffs.
Two competitors without that level of comfort are Peter Hanson and David Toms. If the Playoffs got under way today, Hanson (126th) would miss out by five points. Toms is 145th after his top-10 finish at the PGA but, like Hanson, has work to do at the Wyndham Championship to secure his spot in the Playoffs.
The most notable of the FedExCup drops were the ones that didn’t happen. While Hanson moved up to the front porch of the top 125, he didn’t get through the door. That means there were no changes to the competitors who project to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. With just one week remaining in the PGA TOUR season, don’t expect that to happen again this week at the Wyndham Championship.
