Each week, PGATOUR.COM will take a look at one of the FedExCup contenders in the field and break down his past performances at that week's event, FedExCup history, and potential for success in the 2013 FedExCup chase.
One of the TOUR’s steadiest performers, Jim Furyk returns to the Tampa Bay Championship presented by EverBank looking to build on his strong track record at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course.
After missing the cut (2004) and tying for 52nd (2009) in his first two starts here, Furyk has gone win-T13-playoff runner-up in his last three trips to the difficult layout near Florida’s gulf coast.
This event has served as something of a season-starter for Furyk when things don’t go his way early on. Twice in the FedExCup era has Furyk failed to notch a top-10 finish in his first four events. Both times he broke out of the slump with a strong showing at the Tampa Bay Championship -- winning in 2010 and finishing as a runner-up to Luke Donald a year ago.
That 2012 runner-up performance was a real game-change for Furyk, who had sputtered since winning the 2010 FedExCup, even missing out on the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in 2011 -- the only time in the FedExCup era that he’d failed to qualify. Following the P2, Furyk ran off seven top-25s in his next eight starts (the eighth was a T26 at Quail Hollow) to claw into the FedExCup top 20.
He went on to finish 15th in the final FedExCup standings after back-to-back-to-back top-15 finishes in the final three Playoff events. That marked the fifth time that he finished the season inside the FedExCup top 15.
At No. 72 in the standings, Furyk is in better shape than his 100th-position from a year ago, but he is off to a similarly slow start. As history has shown, though, this is about the time Furyk’s seasons really get under way.
Look for a strong showing from Furyk this week – and in the events that follow -- as he works on his bid to become the TOUR’s second two-time FedExCup champion.
