Inspired by the matte-black helmet craze that's become popular on some college football helmets, Nike Golf announced the addition of a limited-edition VRS Covert 2.0 driver with an anti-glare matte black crown -- the standard VRS Covert 2.0 driver has a red crown -- to its 2014 lineup.
“The Covert 2.0 Matte Black Edition driver offers a unique, limited-edition design combined with Nike’s high speed cavity back technology,” says Rob Arluna, Nike Golf Global Golf Club Business Director. “The black matte finish on the head provides a sleek, modern aesthetic and eliminates glare."
Along with a matte black crown, Nike's all-black VRS Covert 2.0 Matte Black Edition driver comes with a black Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G grip and Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage Black shaft that's meant to give the club a "stealth, covert look."
The driver still features Covert 2.0's pear-shaped head and redesigned cavity-back with Fly-Brace technology that ties the sole and the crown together, making the rear portion of the club head more stable.
The end result is more energy transferred to the face at impact, and increased ball speeds -- up to six extra yards -- when compared to the 2013 version.
An adjustable FlexLoft sleeve, a staple of the 2013 model, allows golfers to move the loft from 8.5 degrees to 12.5 degrees, and the face angle to three different positions.
The Covert 2.0 Matte Black Edition driver (right hand only) will be available May 15 for $300.
