For the first time in more than two years, David Duval will step on the first tee at a PGA TOUR event as a Nike athlete, after the Beaverton, Ore.-based company announced on Monday that Duval, who became the first to win a major championship using Nike clubs when he captured the 2001 British Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes, had re-signed with “the Swoosh” for 2013.
“I could not be more excited to once again become a Nike athlete,” Duval said. “Nike Golf has been a major player in the success I have had throughout my career. I am thrilled to return to the Swoosh and continue my career with a brand that focuses on developing innovative products.”
Duval, who split from Nike in 2010, spent 29 weeks as world No. 1 in 1999 and won 13 PGA TOUR titles between 1997 and 2001. But following the 2001 season, Duval's game hit a rough patch due in large part to a number of nagging injuries. Over the past 10 seasons, Duval's finished inside the top 125 on the money list only once; he also made just 12 cuts in 41 PGA TOUR starts over the last two seasons.
“We have always had a great relationship with David and are happy to welcome him back to the Nike family,” said Mark Thaxton, Nike Golf's Global Director of Sport Marketing Operations.
While Nike made the signing official on Monday, Duval actually broke the news himself back on Jan. 4 when he sent out a tweet about his return to the Swoosh. He'll make his season debut this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
