Every club in Phil Mickelson's bag was working at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but it was his new Callaway RAZR Fit Xtreme driver that gained the most attention during his four-shot win on Sunday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Mickelson, who switched from a RAZR Hawk Tour driver to one of Callaway's latest driver offerings on Tuesday, following a productive range session, averaged 298 yards off the tee for the week, including a 358-yard drive during the second round.
“This driver spins so low that I can have more loft on the club, making it easier to hit," Mickelson said. "This has got to be good for every player I would think, but it sure as heck is good for me. And by having it be a low-spin driver with enough loft, and because it's that RAZR Fit Xtreme where you can fit it, I was able to get it dialed in to where it goes straight. But I'm able to make the same golf swing as my irons so you'll see me extend down the target line, you won't see this kind of tilt because it's not enough loft to get up and it's not low enough spin to not float, and it has been — it really could be a revolutionary club for me."
The 9.5-degree driver has an actual loft of 8.1-degrees with 5 grams in the toe and 3 grams in the heel. The 45-inch shaft is a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki K. 059 prototype model 70X.
Mickelson also made one other adjustment to his bag prior to the start of the first round, replacing the Callaway X Hot Prototype 3-wood he put in play during the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open with the TaylorMade RocketBallz 3-wood he's been gaming since last November.
Phil Mickelson's bag:
Driver: Callaway RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver (9.5 degrees) with a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki K. 059 prototype model 70X shaft

5-wood: Titleist 980F 5-wood (17-degree) with a Graphite Design PM 902 shaft
Irons (4-PW): Callaway RAZR X Muscleback Irons with KBS Tour shafts
Wedges: Callaway JAWS Wedges (52 degrees, 60 degrees, 64 degrees)

Testing out a new club or two prior to the start of a tournament is fairly commonplace for most players, but what Ryan Moore did prior to the start of the Waste Management Phoenix Open was almost unheard of.
Moore, who spent time testing TaylorMade's new R1 driver and RocketBladez Tour irons during a photo shoot at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, decided to put the driver and irons in play — as well as a RBZ Stage 2 Tour fairway 13-degree (Fujikura 7.2 Motore Speeder TS) and RBZ Stage 2 fairway 19-degree (Fujikura 9.2 Motore Speeder TS) to bring the count to 11 new TaylorMade clubs.
The complete bag overhaul worked wonders for Moore in his third start of the season. His fourth-place finish was his fifth top 10 in his past seven starts dating back to last year's Deutsche Bank Championship.
Gainey puts X Hot Pro Hybrid in the bag: Looking to fill a yardage gap between his 3-wood and 20-degree hybrid, Callaway Tour reps built Tommy Gainey an X Hot Pro 18-degree prior to the first round. Reps closed the face of the fairway wood to 19 degrees and went more upright to 61 degrees to obtain the exact distance Gainey wanted.
Vegas tweaks driver, tests fairway woods: One week after Jhonattan Vegas changed his Nike VR_S Covert driver from 8.5 degrees, right position to 10.5 degrees, neutral position at the Farmers Insurance Open, he made slight change in the days leading up to the Waste Management Phoenix Open. In an effort to tune his spin rate, Vegas decided to go with 9.5 degrees, neutral position.
Vegas also decided to go with a 13-degree Nike VR_S Cover Tour 3-wood set in neutral position after testing out various FlexLoft configurations. Vegas felt the new 3-wood helped him launch the ball higher without spinning it too much.
Divots: Phil Mickelson wasn't the only Callaway staffer who put a new RAZR Fit Extreme driver in play. Sang-Moon Bae put a 9.5 degree with an open face angle in the bag after dialing it in during a six-hole test session early in the week. ... Hank Kuehne and Rory Sabbatini became the latest TaylorMade Tour Staffers to switch to the company's new Lethal golf ball. ... Chad Campbell and Tim Herron both tested and decided to put TaylorMade's R1 driver in the bag at the WM Phoenix Open. ... Fredrik Jacobson switched to an Odyssey VersaB/W/B Versa #7, while Colt Knost put an Odyssey Versa 2-Ball in play.
