Set in the Sonoran Desert and surrounded by the majestic McDowell Mountains, the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course is a strategically straightforward, par-71 golf course built in the mode of its predecessor, the TPC Sawgrass with spectator mounding. Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, the Stadium Course demands precision with its numerous water hazards, humps and mounds, and subtly sloping greens. The drivable par-4 17th is among the most exciting holes in golf. Andrew Magee made a hole-in-one there in 2001 after his drive deflected off Tom Byrum’s putter. Palms get sweaty down the stretch, especially if the wind blows, with water coming into play on five of the last eight holes.

The Stadium Course, opened in 1986, is one of two layouts at the TPC Scottsdale (the other is the Desert Course) and represents one of the first collaborations between former British Open champion Tom Weiskopf and architect Jay Morrish. The Stadium Course retains much of its natural desert flavor but is accentuated by man-made touches such as rolling fairways on a flat desert landscape and six water hazards. Hosting some 49,000 rounds per year, the par-71 layout measures 7,216 yards after a 2003 renovation that also included the addition of new bunkers and reconfiguring existing traps.
