Course Overview

One of the most famous and recognizable courses in the world, Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula in Northern California hosts the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am for the 70th year. With its small greens and narrow fairways Pebble Beach, at just 6,858 yards and playing to a par of 72, can be a stern test when the winds kick up. Three straight par 4s running along the rugged coastline, Nos. 8, 9 and 10, are considered the most difficult. The par-5 18th, a dogleg left along the cliffs, is one of the most scenic and well-known in the world. Two other par-72 courses owned by the Pebble Beach Company, Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills, also are used during the tournament.

COURSE HISTORY
Pebble Beach founder Samuel F.B. Morse, a cousin of telegraph inventor Samuel Morse, commissioned respected amateur players Jack Neville and Douglas to design a golf course along Carmel Bay worthy of hosting a top amateur tournament. With little clearing needed, Pebble Beach Golf Links was created and opened in 1919. The California Amateur has been held there since 1920. Jack Nicklaus, who won the 1972 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and calls it his favorite course, made alterations prior to the .92 Open at the fourth, fifth and seventh greens. In 1998 he designed an entirely new par-3 fifth along Stillwater Cove. Pebble Beach has hosted four U.S. Open championships as well as the 1999 U.S. Amateur and 1977 PGA Championship. It is scheduled to host the 2010 U.S. Open.
