For Andrew Loupe, his best round of the season couldn’t have come at a better time.
Loupe entered this week 86th on the money list, just outside of the top-75 mark needed to qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals. He went out Thursday for the first round of the Cox Classic Presented by Lexus of Omaha and shot 63 for a share of the early lead.
“Definitely a fun round,” he said.
Fun, and productive. He’s now projected to move to 12th on the money list – good enough to not only qualify for the Web.com Tour Finals, but also secure a 2013-2013 PGA TOUR cards.
“I know exactly where I am. Obviously, there’s thoughts running through your head. What if I finish here, or finish there. I really just have to chill out and play golf,” Loupe said. He was quick to point out it's just one round. "This one doesn’t mean anything without another good one.”
Loupe shares the early lead with Billy Hurley III, who started the week at 36th and is also projected to move inside the top 25. Hurley is plenty familiar with end-of-season pressure. He entered the 2011 Web.com Tour Championship on the bubble at No. 25 and held on to earn his PGA TOUR card.
"Two years ago, I was 25th, that felt a lot different. But I’m also a lot more experienced as a player, so that feels different too," he said.
Wes Roach, who is just $2,807 behind this year's No. 25 bubble boy Patrick Cantlay, opened with a 65 at Champions Run.
"We put ourselves in a good position for the next couples days, still got a lot of golf left," Roach said. "I’m pleased with the start. Just hope to continue."
Here's a closer look at players projected to make big moves in the money list after the first round.
