August 20, 2013

There's a lot at stake this week on the Web.com Tour.  With the introduction of a significantly enhanced PGA TOUR qualifying structure and the new four-event Web.com Tour Finals this year, the 21-event Regular Season will come to its conclusion on Sunday at the Cox Classic presented by Lexus of Omaha.

Here are this week’s key subplots:

Fight for No. 1

This is a criticial week for Michael Putnam, who looks to finish the Regular Season No. 1 on the money list, a position he has held since winning the Mexico Championship in May. If successful, it means he will be fully exempt in 2013-14 on the PGA TOUR and receive an invitation to THE PLAYERS. The Washington native maintains a $37,735 lead over Ben Martin.  Martin’s closest pursuer, Chesson Hadley, trails him by more than $90,000.

First 25 Cards Will Be Assured

The 25 leading money winners after Sunday’s round will be assured of PGA TOUR cards for the new TOUR wraparound season which begins in October.  The Web.com Tour’s youngest player Patrick Cantlay, who was sidelined much of the summer with back issues, enters the Cox Classic 25th in earnings, with a $2,807 lead over No. 26 Wes Roach.

When the last putt drops on Sunday, all 75 leading money winners will advance to the Finals, where another 25 PGA TOUR cards will be up for grabs based on a cumulative Web.com Tour Finals money list.  The difference between No. 75 Michael Connell and No. 76 Zack Sucher is a miniscule $126.  Unfortunately for the rest, their Web.com Tour season comes to a close.

ONE OTHER NUMBER / 100

While the top 75 and the Web.com Tour Finals are key in most players’ minds this week, the number 100 will also have meaning to some.  A finish of 100 or higher on the money list ensures those players who do not make the Finals will have a place to play next year in their pursuit of a  PGA TOUR card.  Canadian Richard Scott, who had his best finish of the year in Knoxville, a ninth, sits on No. 100 heading to Omaha.  Scott’s lead on No. 101, Kyle Reifers, is $200.
