Tucked away in the rolling hills and Blue Ridge Mountains of South and North Carolina sit the quiet communities and golf courses at The Cliffs. Located in places like Traveler's Rest and Sunset, S.C., it's more sleepy hollow than Hollywood.
But not so this week, as celebrities will be invading the area for the BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs on the Nationwide Tour. From the recognizable to the "can't quite place them but I know they're on TV," it'll be a who's who of sports stars, actors, musicians and even a nine-time PGA TOUR major winner. For the first time, live scoring for the celebrity portion will be available on PGATOUR.com in addition to the usual Nationwide Tour coverage.
Headlining the famous field -- who will be playing with Tour professionals in a three-day, better-ball format, with the lowest 14 teams advancing to Sunday -- is Academy Award-winning actor and star of Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves and Bull Durham. Perhaps best known in the golfing world for starring as golf pro Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, Costner's caddie in that film Cheech Marin ("Romeo") will also play in the BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs this week.
From Oscar-caliber actors to Grammy-winning musicians -- like members of the band Hootie and the Blowfish, including lead singer Darius Rucker and lead guitarist Mark Bryan -- about 25 stars will be teeing it up. There's former "J.A.G." co-stars Catherine Bell and David James Elliot; Gary Valentine (cousin Danny from the hit show "King of Queens"); R&B singer Javier Colon; and comedian, television star and avid golfer George Lopez. Also in the field is funnyman Tom Dreesen; "I'll Be" and "I Could Not Ask for More" singer Edwin McCain; singer/songwriter Josh Kelley; and Kevin Sorbo, also known as Hercules in the show "Hercules: The Legendary Journey" from the late 1990s.
Bell won't be the only woman in the field, as sportscaster Jennifer Mills from the GOLF CHANNEL, model Joanna Krupa and Wayne Gretzky's wife, actress Janet Jones-Gretzky, will grace the links.
For the sports-minded fan, there'll be a plethora of athletic talent on show, as hockey great Wayne Gretzky; Heisman trophy winner and former Washington Redskin George Rogers; Sterling Sharpe, five-time All-Pro wide receiver in the NFL who attended the University of South Carolina; former Major League Baseball star and Boston Red Sox left fielder Jim Rice; and former NFL superstar and quarterback John Elway; and member of Clemson University's 1981 National Championship football team and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Jeff Davis will all participate.
Then there's a golf legend, as Gary Player, who is in the tournament for the fourth straight year and will again extend his own record for oldest player to participate in a Nationwide Tour event. At 71, the International Team captain for the 2007 Presidents Cup still plays on the Champions Tour and travels the world as an ambassador for the game of golf.
Player, along with Mills, Bruce Fleisher, Lee Janzen, Lucas Glover, Charles Warren and Johnson Wagner, is a property owner at the Cliffs. He's also a spokesperson for the private community, which includes two Jack Nicklaus courses and two Tom Fazio designs.
