ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Over the past 11 months, Tommy Gainey has made just 14 cuts with only one top 10 in 28 starts. Maybe a return to The McGladrey Classic will help spark his game.

A year ago, Gainey narrowly missed shooting 59 in the final round before settling with a 60 and more importantly the win.

"It was just a special round," Gainey said Wednesday from Sea Island Golf Club. "Rounds like that, they don't happen every day, or maybe like once in every five years you see a player shoot a round like that, especially being seven shots out of the lead."

Indeed.

Gainey finished the week over par in 18 of his starts in the 2013 season.

So what does he remember from last year's final round here?

Aside from just trying to improve his position, not as much as you might think.

"I didn't know I was putting for 59," Gainey said. "I was just trying to make birdie on the last hole. And whatever it was it was."

Now Gainey is hoping he can find his way back to similar form.

"I feel like since I've won here, I feel like that I can do it again," he said. "I'm just going to play the best I can play for the week, and what happens I can live with"
