LAS VEGAS -- Three dozen players were headed from the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to Malaysia for the CIMB Classic, a no-cut event that offers a guaranteed payday and FedExCup points. Max Homa's next event has no prize money.

He was scheduled to board a red-eye flight Sunday evening for North Carolina. He'll arrive Monday morning for the first stage of q-school, which is scheduled to start the following day at Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst in North Carolina.

Homa shot 67 on Sunday at TPC Summerlin, including back-to-back eagles, and finished T-30 in his second PGA TOUR event as a pro.The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open was not part of Homa's original schedule, but he earned the start after finishing T-9 in his pro debut in the previous week's Frys.com Open; his top-10 there gave him another week on TOUR.

"It gave me a lot of confidence," Homa said. "I'm having a lot of fun. It stinks to have to leave."

Homa, the 2013 NCAA individual champion, had an impressive start to his pro career. He shot in 60s in seven of eight rounds in his two TOUR starts, shooting a combined 22 under. His scoring average was 68.25. On Sunday, Homa hit his 237-yard second shot at the par-5 ninth to 5 feet, then holed out from 152 yards on the par-4 10th. He played his final 10 holes Saturday in 6 under.

Homa earned 75 FedExCup points for last week's T-9 finish. He does not appear on the FedExCup points list, but points earned as a non-member can help him earn special temporary membership or lock up an early spot in the 2014 Web.com Tour Finals.

A player can earn special temporary membership by equaling or surpassing No. 150 on the previous season's FedExCup points list; Justin Bolli finished 150th with 278 points in 2013. Special temporary membership allows a player to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions; non-members are limited to seven sponsor exemptions per year.

Nos. 126-200 on the FedExCup points list -- and non-members earning enough points to finish in the top 200 -- earn a spot in the Web.com Tour Finals, which are held opposite the FedExCup Playoffs, as do the top 75 on the Web.com Tour money list.

Kevin Penner, an alum of nearby UNLV, made the cut in his PGA TOUR professional debut this week. He shot 71-65-72-69 while playing on a sponsor exemption and finished T-43. Penner already made it through q-school's first stage, winning his site by two shots.
