SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Robert Garrigus describes his FedExCup Playoffs as "frustrating," and with good reason. He missed the cut in both starts.
"I took a month off and didn't touch a club for probably 20, 25 days and I hit the gym the whole time," he said. "I felt like I had let my cardio slide and just wasn't working hard enough. ... So I got back into shape. It's kind of showing this week."
Garrigus shot 8-under 63 Friday. At 9-under 133, he was in second place when the morning wave completed play. He had nine birdies and one bogey Friday.
"Today it felt pretty simple," he said. "It was an A+ day."
He finished 91st in the FedExCup standings in 2013, one year after qualifying for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. His second, and final, top-10 of 2013 came at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. After starting the season with five consecutive top-25s, he had just three top-25s and zero top-10s in his final 17 starts.
