Golf's greatest stadium welcomes one of the world's strongest fields for THE PLAYERS Championship this week.
THE PLAYERS boasts 49 of the top 50 in the FedExCup standings and 89 of the top 100 in the season-long race.
With that many of the top-ranked players gathering in one place, there's bound to be a wealth of movement up and down the ranks. one spot in particular that is up for grabs is the No. 1 position, currently held by Hunter Mahan.
Mahan, who took over the top spot following his victory at the Shell Houston Open, is the only player on TOUR with multiple 2012 victories. A victory for anyone else currently ranked inside the top 17 in the standings, however, could end Mahan's six-week reign atop the standings.
Closest in pursuit of Mahan is Rory McIlroy, the FedExCup No. 3 and world's top-ranked player. In five TOUR starts this season, McIlroy has just one finish outside the top 3. In two career PLAYERS starts, however, he has two missed cuts.
Two players with successful records, and victories, at TPC Sawgrass have a chance to catch Mahan this week. Tiger Woods (No. 13) and Phil Mickelson (No. 4), who went into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, are within striking distance. Woods, the 2001 champion and Mickelson, the 2007 champion, have 32 starts and 15 top-25 finishes between them at TPC Sawgrass.
