The PGA TOUR travels to central Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance. The strong invitational field is tough to get into, but for those in need of a FedExCup boost, it provides a great opportunity to move ahead of the many others who are idle this week.
Just 33 competitors in the field at Muirfield Village are currently ranked 100th or lower in the FedExCup standings. That leaves roughly three-quarters of the competitors ranked between Nos. 100 and 229 without any opportunity to earn points this week.
With just 12 weeks (14 events) remaining until the Playoffs get under way, these are the chances that must be seized for bubble players wanting to lock up spots in the field at the Barclays.
Among those in that group this week are past champions Ernie Els (2004), Vijay Singh (1997) and Fred Couples (1998). Each of those three has six top-10 finishes at Muirfield Village and could all but wrap up a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs with a big week.
Camilo Villegas has made half of his cuts this season and enters the week at No. 116 in the FedExCup standings. The good news for the Colombian is that he’s made five consecutive cuts in this event. The downside is that he’s never finished inside the top 25 in this event.
A trio of competitors well down the FedExCup ranks have found some better success at the Memorial. Mike Weir (186th) had racked up four top-10 finishes in Dublin before failing to make the cut in each of the last three editions of this event. Davis Love III (210th) and Jonathan Byrd (224th) have both been slowed by injury this season but boast strong records in this event. Love has five top 10s and four other top 25s while Byrd has finished inside the top 10 here each of the last two years.
Below you'll find a list of a dozen players currently outside the FedExCup top 100, how high they could move with a finish of first-through-tenth place, and how far they could possibly fall if they do not earn any FedExCup points this week.
