SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Tournament officials Thursday confirmed that the teams of Fred Couples-Jay Haas and Hale Irwin-Ian Baker-Finch have committed to the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. Both teams will compete in the 54-hole Legends Division, which awards official money and Charles Schwab Cup points, when the 35th annual event returns to the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa on April 16-22.
Former world No.1 Couples is a winner of 15 PGA TOUR events, including the 1992 Masters and two PLAYERS Championships. The fan favorite made his Champions Tour debut in 2010 where he's gone on to collect seven additional titles, including a major at the 2011 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship. He will partner with long-time friend and his two-time Presidents Cup assistant captain Haas for the second time in Savannah where they finished T4 in 2010. The duo had intended to play together last year, but Couples was forced to withdraw due to back problems.
Haas won back-to-back titles on the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa course when the event was previously held as individual competition in 2006-07. Since joining the Champions Tour in 2004, Haas has captured 15 wins and is a two-time Champions Tour Player of the Year. The Greenville, S.C., resident with nine PGA TOUR career titles has earned two Charles Schwab Cup trophies for winning the Champions Tour's season-long points race in 2006 and 2008. Haas finished T24 at last year's Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf with partner Jim Rutledge.
World Golf Hall of Fame member Irwin is the Champions Tour's all-time victory leader with 45 titles and two Charles Schwab Cup titles. His 20 PGA TOUR wins include three U.S. Open titles and he was a member of five U.S. Ryder Cup teams. Irwin won the 2004 Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf when it was an individual competition and will be making his eighth appearance in Savannah.
Australian native Baker-Finch has amassed 17 titles around the world, including the 1991 British Open Championship. He's made just two starts on the Champions Tour to-date, spending the majority of his time working on CBS Sports' golf telecasts of PGA TOUR events. Baker-Finch finished T3 in his first start at the 2011 Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf with partner Joe Ozaki.
The Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf's week of competition kicks off on April 16 with the Demaret Division on Monday and Tuesday (unofficial money) followed by the Raphael Division on Friday and Saturday (unofficial money). Official competition begins with the first round of the Legends Division on Friday, April 20.
