SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Liberty Mutual Legend of Golf recently received the 2011 Sports Event of the Year award from the Greater Savannah Sports Council in Georgia.
The award is presented annually to an event in the region that has excelled in promoting its given sport by having a safe and successful community event.
In presenting the award to the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, officials with the Greater Savannah Sports Council cited the success of the tournament in its ability to attract visitors to the region and the generous contributions the event has made to local charities.
Celebrating its ninth year at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa in Savannah, the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf features a unique all-team format with three separate competitions taking place during the week.
The 2011 tournament also offered a variety of family-friendly activities, including free admission for youth under 18 and members of the armed forces, Military Appreciation Day, a free concert in Forsyth Park and a sunrise worship service on Easter Sunday.
"The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf has truly established itself among Savannah's marquee events of the year," said Joseph Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah. "Our city is very appreciative of the commitment that both Liberty Mutual and the PGA TOUR have made to Savannah over the years and this type of recognition is well-deserved."
"Being named the 2011 Sports Event of the Year is a great honor for the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf and a wonderful way to cap off the season" said the tournament's executive director, Joe Rotellini. "Savannah has been a fantastic host to this event since 2003, so it is a privilege to accept this award from the city. We would like to thank Liberty Mutual and the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa for their loyal partnerships, the tournament's nearly 700 volunteers for helping make this event possible each year and the entire Savannah community for their support."
