HARRISON, N.Y. -- Hale Irwin, Tom Kite and Scott Simpson have joined the field at the Champions Tour's final major championship of the season, the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, to be held on Aug. 17-21 at Westchester Country Club.
Irwin has 45 wins on the Champions Tour and has earned over $25 million in official prize money in his 17 years on the Tour. The World Golf Hall of Fame member won three U.S. Opens in 1974, '79 and '90 and a total of 20 times on the PGA TOUR. A native of Missouri, he has won seven majors since joining the Champions Tour in 1995, including the 1999 Senior Players Championship.
2004 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Kite has nine wins on the Champions Tour, including one major title. He amassed 19 victories on the PGA TOUR, including the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, and was the TOUR's leading money-winner in 1981 and 1989.
Like Irwin and Kite, Simpson also has a U.S. Open victory, capturing the title in 1987 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco by one stroke over Tom Watson. The San Diego native won seven times on the PGA TOUR before joining the Champions Tour in 2005. He collected his first Champions Tour victory in 2006 at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
Simpson and Irwin are eager to return to Westchester where they both earned victories on the PGA TOUR.
"I look forward to going back there," said Irwin, who won at Westchester in 1990. "Unlike some of the courses we play where you hit it and find it, this is one that you better hit it well or you'll never find it."
Simpson won at Westchester in 1984 and remembers the course well. "It's just a really good course," he said. "It will be a lot of fun to get back there. It's a great old-style golf course with short, tricky holes, and some long tough holes. It's really challenging."
Past Senior Players Champions Mark O'Meara (2010), Jay Haas (2009), D.A. Weibring (2008), Loren Roberts (2007), and Bobby Wadkins (2006) have already committed to compete in this year's championship. More player announcements will come as additional commitments are received leading up to the event.
