PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Harold Varner is 17 years old so naturally he described his first round at Pebble Beach Golf Links as pretty "awesome".
Partnered with Morris Hatalsky, who made eight birdies on Pebble Beach Golf Links and just one bogey for a solid round of 65 on Friday, young Varner from Gastonia, N.C., helped subtract three more strokes from their combined score to sit in second in the pro-junior competition.
"It's a joy to play this week with a young player like Harold, a talented young golfer," said Hatalsky. "There's such enthusiasm with young players it rubs off on you."
Bruce Vaughan was co-leader with Hatalsky after the first round but his junior partner J.D. Archibald held the outright lead in the pro-junior tournament. Archibald and Vaughan both qualified to make it into this tournament -- Vaughan does not have exemption status on the Champions Tour and has to play his way into tournaments each week -- and the duo shot a combined 59 to lead the pack.
That means Archibald, who got his start in golf at age seven and plays out of The First Tee of Ventura County, helped the pair by six strokes in the best-ball format. Stow that name away in your memory -- Archibald finished tied for ninth in the 2006 USGA Junior Amateur.
The low 22 juniors and top-10 amateur teams will get a chance to play at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Sunday with all of the Champions Tour pros.
Vaughan's amateur partners Ronald Croen and Andy Goodman lead the pro/amateur competition after the first round at 16-under with Mark McCumber's partners Brett Trevett and Harry Trevett in second at 15-under-par.
Several big names are also featured amongst the amateur participants, including actors Clint Eastwood and George Lopez and former San Francisco 49er Harris Barton. Eastwood, wife Dina and Mark O'Meara shot a combined 4-under, which places them near the bottom of the pack. Lopez, an avid golf fan and supporter, fared better, shooting a combined 62 with Bobby Wadkins and Jonathan Antin.
Never heard of Antin? He's a hairstylist to several of Hollywood's top stars and a star himself on Bravo's hit TV show "Blow Out". In addition to Madonna and actresses Kirsten Dunst and Alicia Silverstone, Antin has worked with none other than Tiger Woods.
