    • Fred Couples Joins World-Class Field at the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship

2013 World Golf Hall of Fame Inductee Couples swings into Kapolei Golf Club, September 18 through 22

HONOLULU (September 13, 2013) - Pacific Links Hawai‘i is pleased to welcome Fred Couples to the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship at the award-winning Kapolei Golf Club. The 2013 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee's entry into the $1.8 million full-field Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship further escalates the highly competitive field set to tee off Sept. 18.

Couples has posted eight wins since joining the Champions Tour in 2010, when he was named Champions Tour Rookie of the Year. Known for the long drives that earned him the nickname "Boom Boom," Couples has finished as a runner-up in four Champions Tour events this year. On Sept. 16, he will join 80 professionals, including 15 winners of 2013 Champions Tour events, driving for the title.

"I'm ecstatic to join the talented field of players already committed to the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship," said Couples. "Hawai‘i's warm and welcoming culture, as well as its natural beauty, make it the perfect place to compete."

The consistently strong 1992 Masters Champion placed 13th at Augusta National in 2013 and has won 15 PGA TOUR events in his 30-year career.

"A key goal of the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship is to serve as a catalyst to further elevate the quality of golf in Hawai‘i," said Bruce Simmonds, Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Links International. "The commitment of world-renowned golfer Fred Couples to the tournament is thrilling for both kama‘āina and fans all over the world."

Couples commitment further boosts a deeply talented field at the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship, including recently added Champions Tour rookie Vijay Singh, winner of 34 career PGA TOUR events; Masters champion and 16-time career PGA TOUR winner Mark O'Meara; top three Charles Schwab Cup ranked golfers Kenny Perry, Bernhard Langer and David Frost; fellow World Golf Hall of Fame inductees Isao Aoki, Sandy Lyle, Tom Kite, Nick Price and Hale Irwin; and 2013 Champions Tour major winners Mark Wiebe and Kohki Idoki.

The 2012 Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship defending champion Willie Wood is also committed to return, as have eight-time PGA TOUR winner Fred Funk; 13-time PGA TOUR winner Mark Calcavecchia; U.S. Open champion Scott Simpson and 2013 Champions Tour event winners John Cook, Brad Faxon, Jeff Sluman, Russ Cochran, Craig Stadler, Tom Pernice Jr., John Riegger, Rocco Mediate, Esteban Toledo and Bart Bryant.

All proceeds from the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship benefit the local community through the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating and sustaining programs that support Hawai'i's ecosystem, keiki and culture. Proceeds from the inaugural Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship in 2012 allowed the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Foundation to gift a total of $100,000 to Hawai‘i non-profits on the Leeward Coast of O‘ahu.
