Tournament organizers extend agreement with PGA TOUR's Champions Tour MONTREAL, November 29, 2012 - Great news for golf fans! The PGA TOUR and Synchro Sports have announced that the 4th edition of the Montreal Championship presented by Desjardins will be conducted on the Rouville course at Richelieu Valley Golf Club, September 2-8, 2013. "Tournament organizers Synchro Sports have proven year after year that they are capable of producing a tournament of very high quality. We are happy to extend our agreement with them and have every confidence that the tournament will continue to make a significant impact in the community," stated Mike Stevens, President of the Champions Tour. The Montreal Championship has also extended their agreement with Richelieu Valley Golf Club located in Sainte-Julie, Quebec. With a prize purse of $1.8 million, the Montreal Championship has quickly established itself as a popular tournament on the Champions Tour schedule. "Richelieu Valley received raved reviews from the players last year. We are delighted to extend our partnership with the club and announce that the 2013 championship will be played on their historic Rouville course", said Tournament Director David Skitt. A return to Richelieu Valley, a move to the historic Rouville course Richelieu Valley Golf Club boasts two 18-hole championship courses (Verchères and Rouville). The 7,092 yard, par-72 Rouville course reopened for play this past July after it underwent extensive renovations, including the redesign of all 18 greens, under the direction of Canadian golf course architect Neil Haworth. "I really enjoyed the Verchères course last year, as let's just say I had a bit of success on it", laughed defending champion Mark Calcavecchia. "However, having had a chance to see the Rouville course, I have to say that it looks like an even sterner test of golf and was in immaculate condition". Richelieu Valley Golf Club has played host to a pair of Canadian Open's (1971 and 1973) along with the 1994 Skins Game featuring Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, Nick Price and Tom Watson. Richelieu Valley was also the site of the 1999 Canadian Senior Open Championship, as well as the 2012 Montreal Championship presented by Desjardins, won by Mark Calcavecchia. Richelieu Valley Golf Club President Stphane Dub was thrilled that the Montreal Championship was again returning to the club next year: "We had a dream week last year. The temperature was ideal, the golf course was in excellent condition and our members applauded the organization of the tournament. Let's just say that having all eyes turned towards Richelieu Valley for the week of the tournament has been very beneficial to the club in many regards". Tournament to be conducted in the heat of the Charles Schwab Cup race The 4th annual Montreal Championship will move back on the official Champions Tour schedule of events and will now take place September 2-8, 2013. The 2013 official schedule has been slightly reconfigured by Champions Tour officials and the new date is expected to have a significant impact on the Montreal Championship next season. "The fact that the Montreal Championship will be the 20th of 26 official events on the 2013 schedule positions the tournament in an envious position with respect to players contending for player-of-the-year honors and the Charles Schwab Cup", said Tournament Director David Skitt. "Furthermore, the new dates have been very well received by our corporate partners who notably see an opportunity to better reach their target markets and their business partners". In its brief history as an official event on the Champions Tour, the Montreal Championship was awarded with the 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award and the 2012 Fan Favorite Award. |
