Constellation Senior Players Championship

POTOMAC, MD, July 12, 2010 - The 2010 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship collected its first three player commitments over the weekend with defending champion Jay Haas, 2009 runner-up Tom Watson and World Golf Hall of Fame member Nick Price all set to compete, tournament officials today announced.  The trio will highlight what is annually one of the strongest fields of the year at the Champions Tour's final major championship of 2010, October 4-10, at newly renovated TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

"We are thrilled to announce that our defending champion Jay Haas, along with two of the game's greats in Tom Watson and Nick Price, will compete in the 2010 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship," said tournament Executive Director Steve Schoenfeld.  "All three have performed at the highest level at this event in the past and I'm confident they, along with the entire field, will put on a tremendous show for golf fans throughout Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. as the tournament moves to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm." 

A 14-time winner on the Champions Tour since turning 50 in 2004, Haas claimed the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship title last year in dramatic fashion, posting a bogey-free, 6-under-par 64 to earn a one-stroke victory over Watson.  The 64 tied the course record at Baltimore Country Club's East Course.  Though TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm is a new host course for the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, Haas should be able to draw on past experience and past success at the venue.  In 10 starts on the PGA TOUR at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Haas, a native of Greenville, SC, made the cut nine times with his best finish a T11 at the Kemper Open in 1988 and 1997.

The victim of Haas' bogey-free, 6-under-par 64 in the final round of the 2009 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, Watson's runner-up finish last year was his third second-place finish in the event.  In seven previous appearances in the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, dating back to 2000, Watson has never finish worse than a T18 (2000) and has finished inside the top 10 five times.  His runner-up finish in Baltimore was part of an incredible stretch of golf for the 1988 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee last summer in which he finished second at The Open Championship, T8 at the Senior British Open, T5 at the JELD-WEN Tradition and T8 at The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.  Fresh off a T29 at this year's U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach last month, Watson is set to compete this week at The Open Championship at St. Andrews.   

Already a winner twice on the Champions Tour in 2010, Price will make his fourth-career appearance at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship.  The winner of 18 tournaments on the PGA TOUR, Price finished T9 last year, nine shots off Haas' winning pace, after producing a T3 in 2008.  He finished T39 in his Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship debut in 2007.  Much like Haas, Price will look to draw off of solid past performances at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, finishing T3 and T9 at the Kemper Open in 1997 and 1995, respectively.   

TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, which hosted a PGA TOUR event from 1987-2004 and 2006, was recently named No. 12 on Golfweek's list of the "Best New Courses for 2009."  Current Champions Tour stars who won PGA TOUR events at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm include Gil Morgan (1990), Morris Hatalsky (1988) and Tom Kite (1987).
