Senior Players Championship Adds Crenshaw, Lehman, Sluman, Sutton
HARRISON, N.Y. - The Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship has added four PGA TOUR major champions to the field list. Ben Crenshaw, Tom Lehman, Jeff Sluman and Hal Sutton will each participate in the championship to be held at Westchester Country Club on August 17-21.
World Golf Hall of Fame member Crenshaw is a two-time Masters champion who joined the Champions Tour in 2002 after a successful PGA TOUR career highlighted by 19 victories. The Texan nicknamed "Gentle Ben" was a member of three U.S. Ryder Cup teams and captained the 1999 squad to the greatest comeback in event history- winning 8 1/2 points in singles matches on the final day to come from four points back and steal the victory. Crenshaw made 22 starts at Westchester Country Club during his days on the PGA TOUR. His best performance was T2 to David Graham in 1976.
A longtime fixture on the PGA TOUR, Lehman earned five titles during his career including the 1996 British Open. He's played on three U.S. Presidents Cup squads, three U.S. Ryder Cup teams and served as captain of the 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup team at The K Club in Ireland. Success followed Lehman to the Champions Tour in 2009, where he's gone on to collect another five titles. Three of those titles have come this year, making him a strong contender for 2011 Champions Tour Player of the Year. Should he accomplish the feat, Lehman would become the first player in history to earn Player of the Year titles on all three U.S Tours (Nationwide Tour, PGA TOUR and Champions Tour).
Lehman has competed at Westchester Country Club 14 times and finished T2 to Ernie Els in 1996. "It's always been one of my very favorite courses," said Lehman. "I am absolutely thrilled to be going back."
Sluman made history by earning the first of his six PGA TOUR titles at the 1988 PGA Championship at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, OK. Since his arrival on the Champions Tour in 2007, he's added four wins to his resume, most recently at the 2011 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
The Rochester, NY native is also no stranger to Westchester Country Club, having played at the venue 19 times while on the PGA TOUR. "It's one of my all-time favorite courses," said Sluman, who logged two top-10 finishes there over the years. "It's an old-style golf course and just a neat course; I really like everything about the place. I loved it. It's not an overly long course but it's challenging because of the green complexes. But it's fantastic just being in New York with the New York fans. It will be a wonderful place for the event."
Sutton is a 14-time PGA TOUR winner over a career that stretched from 1982-2006. A native of Louisiana, Sutton earned a major title at the 1983 PGA Championship after defeating Jack Nicklaus by one stroke at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. He is also a two-time PLAYERS Championship winner. Sutton joined the Champions Tour in late 2008 and has had eight top-10 finishes. He's made 13 starts at Westchester Country Club and had two top-25 finishes.
Other players announced to date include defending champion Mark O'Meara, Mark Calcavecchia, David Frost, Bob Gilder, Jay Haas, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Corey Pavin, Nick Price, Loren Roberts, Scott Simpson, Bob Tway, Bobby Wadkins, Tom Watson and D.A. Weibring. More player announcements will come as additional commitments are received leading up to the Championship.
