SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The team of J.C. Snead and Gibby Gilbert defended their Demaret Division title at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf on Tuesday when Snead sank a six-inch birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat the team of Larry Ziegler and Frank Beard. The two teams had finished tied at 21-under-par 123 at the conclusion of the 36-hole, two-day event.
Snead and Gilbert had trailed by as many as four strokes with eight holes remaining, but they used six birdies and an eagle (Gilbert/No. 13/25-footer) on the back nine to tie Ziegler and Powell at the 36th hole. Snead made a 10-footer for a birdie at No. 18 to force the playoff and then his critical chip to six inches from 25 yards on the first hole proved decisive.
"It was tough out there today because at one time we were four shots down, but we kept plugging along and we finished eight-under-par on the back nine which got us in the playoff. It was a good team effort," said Gilbert.
"Gibby made a huge eagle for us on No. 13 which really turned things around. We got lucky. We were way behind at one time and we just kept firing 'em in there," added Snead.
The team of Lee Trevino and Mike Hill, who were bidding for their sixth win overall in this event failed to hold on to their two-stroke margin after Monday's opening round. Trevino and Hill finished third overall.
The win earned Gilbert and Snead $60,000 each, while Ziegler and Beard each earned $34,000.
